As you all know, I am currently working on a cardigans' collection. For me personally, cardigans are the most versatile pieces of all knitted clothing. It can be worn buttoned and unbuttoned, and we can add pockets — a lot of functionality in one piece of clothing. When I show my designs to my mommy, she is, like all mothers, enthusiastic and happy. But then the remark always follows: "there are no pockets here; it will not work." Or: "this one with pockets is perfect!" And also: "I'll take this, just add the pockets for me."
The "Vagabond" cardigan became the first in the collection (the pattern came out a long time ago, you can buy it here, but due to my endless and over-the-top busyness, the summing up is very much behind). A strange name of the design, it would seem. Everyone wants to be a "Princess," and then someone forces you to become "Vagabond." Or "Yeti." Or "Shepherd." Well, this is my view of design. I have said many times that I am very much into a compound of "ugly beautiful," or the pie turns out much more delicious if you add a pinch of salt to the dough. Salt in "Vagabond" is wide stripes, which are more characteristic of menswear, bouclé yarn, and washed-out colors, hinting of wear and tear. There is nothing else out of the ordinary in "Vagabond." Stripes, a classic deep V-neck, drop and fully-fashioned shoulders, and the pockets with a diagonal opening. The design is quite simple, it includes all the necessary attributes that improve the fit, and with that, it seems, I could end the presentation. But wait – there is one exciting feature in "Vagabond"!
There is a myth that horizontal stripes increase us in volume and size. I do not argue with this, but if you start sorting through everything, it means that full-body-type people are contraindicated to wear knitted clothes. The stripes add width, the short sleeve reveals the fat on the arms, the cables make us bigger, the lace is see-through, the colorwork, like a double knit, makes us look fat, the thick yarn increases us in size, the cropped length does not cover our belly, the minimal positive ease emphasizes the fat on the back. That's it. The knitting needles can be thrown away, and the yarn can be gifted to the skinny ladies. We can go fishing since knitting is not meant to be our hobby anymore.
I know all these complaints very well, and every time, before starting to work on the particular design, I list them in my head, trying to conquer them or get around them. Or bust these long-term myths. Stripes do not make us look fuller or bigger if they are framed! Next, I'm going to explain what a "frame" is in knitting. It is already arranged in our perception of colors that white and light colors will seem larger than black and dark ones. White is an emitting color; black is an absorbing color.

Как вы все знаете, сейчас я работаю над коллекцией кардиганов. Лично для меня кардиган – самая нужная вещь из все вязаных. Его можно носить застегнутым и расстегнутым, а также на кардиганах мы можем добавлять карманы – много функционала в одном предмете одежды. Я когда маме показываю свои дизайны, она как мама, восторгается и радуется. Но потом всегда следует замечание: "тут нет карманов, не годится". Или: "вот это вещь – с карманами!" И еще: "это я заберу, только довяжи карманы".
Кардиган "Бродяга" стал самым первым в коллекции (описание вышло давно, его можете приобрести тут. Но из-за вечной занятости подведение итогов очень опаздывает). Странное название для дизайна, казалось бы. Все хотят быть "Принцессами", а тут кто-то заставляет вас стать "Бродягой". Или "Йети". Или "Пастухом". Ну вот такой у меня взгляд на дизайн. Я много раз рассказывала о том, что мне нравится сочетание "ugly beautiful", некрасивое в красивом, или пирог станет намного вкуснее, если в тесто добавить щепотку соли. Соль в "Бродяге" – это широкие полосы, которые свойственны больше мужской одежде, пряжа букле и застиранные цвета, намекающие на изношенность. Больше в "Бродяге" нет ничего необычного. Полосы, классическая глубокая V-горловина, спущенное "японское" плечо и, конечно, карманы с диагональным отверстием. Конструкция несложная, в ней включены все нужные атрибуты, улучшающие посадку, и этим, вроде, можно было бы представление закончить. Но не тут-то было. В "Бродяге" кроется одна очень интересная идея!
Бытует миф, что горизонтальные полосы увеличивают в объемах и в размере. С этим я не спорю, но если начать перебирать все, значит, полным людям вязаное носить противопоказано. Полосатое расширяет, короткий рукав открывает жирок на руках, Араны полнят, ажуры просвечиваются, жаккард, как двойная вязка, полнит, толстая пряжа увеличивает, короткое не закрывает живот, прилегающее подчеркивает жирок на спине. Все, спицы можно выбросить, пряжу раздарить худышкам и пойти рыбачить, раз уж вязать не суждено.
Я все эти жалобы знаю наизусть, и каждый раз, перед тем, как начать работать над дизайном, перечисляю у себя в голове, и пытаюсь их обыграть или обойти. Или просто взять и разрушить эти устоявшиеся мифы. Полосатое не полнит, если полосы разместить в раме! Что такое "рама" в вязании, попытаюсь объяснить. Так уже устроено в нашем восприятии цветов, что белое и светлое будет казаться больше, чем черное и темное. Белый – цвет излучающий, черный – поглощающий.

The darker dusty rose color is arranged along all the cardigan edges, where it was possible to place it technically. Bottom ribs of the body and sleeves, sleeve caps at the armholes, shoulders, button band, and even pocket openings. Thus, the lighter "emitting" stripes are curbed by a darker "absorbing" frame, which does not allow them to spread out in all directions, visually increasing.
Look at a few more pictures. The following one has identical in size rectangles in it. The one with a darker frame looks a little smaller.
