The canyon is a deep valley with very steep, often hanging slopes and a narrow bottom. Often in canyons, you can find unique geological structures called hoodoos, carved by erosion as a result of exposure to wind, water, and ice. Nature is also able to create eyelets from solid matter for millennia. For a cardigan "Canyon", millennia and forces of nature are not needed. The eyelets between the winding cables can be easily done only with knitting needles and yarn. The cardigan is worked from bottom to top by separate pieces, which are further joined in a round yoke. The "cliffs" in the yoke upward become narrower using some intricate decreases. Side horizontal bust darts and the back neck shaping are added. The belt here does not play any practical function but is just an accessory for styling the looks.
It has been a long time since the testing of this long cardigan has been over, and I could not get together to summarize. I like writing, and it does not bother me at all. But there are times when I cannot let go of the needles, and there are times when I prefer writing because, sometimes, I can barely even look at the needles. Now I have a "knitting period." I want to finish the spring collection, but to postpone summarizing is already merely unforgivable. The canyon was born for almost six years. That is the most extended designing process of anything in my practice, so I cherish it very much. It all started with a trip to the United States in 2014 with my husband in western and central America, including the Grand Canyon. The journey was breathtaking, which happens once in a lifetime. During testing on the forum, I talked more extensively, showing pictures. Here I am going to show only a few so that you can create an impression for yourself, what it was about, and what was the source of inspiration. The Grand Canyon itself is represented here, including Zion, Bryce, Sedona, Arches, Goblin Valley, and others.

Прошло уже много времени после окончания тестирования этого длинного кардигана, а я никак не соберусь подвести итоги. Я очень люблю писать, и это меня никак не отягощает. Но бывают периоды, когда я не могу отпустить спиц из рук, а бывает, что хочется писать, так как временами я даже не могу посмотреть на спицы. Вот теперь у меня период вязания, хочется завершить весеннюю коллекцию, но оттягивать подведение итогов уже просто некультурно.
Canyon у меня рождался почти шесть лет. Это самый долгий временной промежуток рождения чего-либо в моей практике, поэтому я им очень дорожу. I have already represented the Canyon stitch pattern in a Morning sweater. Here it acted as a middle insert and was well-received by those who already made this sweater. But I had to give a chance to the Canyon pattern to flourish and sing in solo.

When I worked on the design, I knew one thing – square-chess type stitch patterns are incredibly complicated to model and shape. The stitch pattern Canyon exactly belongs to this type. I agreed on the short rows in the bust dart, which ruins the stitch pattern, preferring to better fit. But how to shape everything else – had no idea. Imagine a set-in sleeve and broken pattern repeats at the seams of armholes and sleeve caps. That is a joke, but Mother Nature, who has created the beauty from the rocks for thousands of years, would undoubtedly be offended by me. Here, my favorite technique, called "whole motif decrease," came to the rescue. What is it? Now I'm going to tell you. Decreases in pieces appear with making single or double decreases in the indicated places every other or more row. The piece gradually becomes smaller, and this moment is clear to everyone. It suits for Stockinette and simple stitch patterns. But what to do when the pattern repeat is slightly larger than two stitches? By decreasing it by one stitch at a time, we ruin the motif, and it seems to be bitten, defective, and upset with life. No one says that this is bad, and there are cases when it is impossible to do otherwise. But if there is an opportunity to choose another technology, then why not? Say, in the Yeti cardigan with a set-in sleeve (see below), where the precise shape of the armhole and sleeve cap is critical, the preference is given to it, sacrificing other possibilities to present the stitch pattern more engagingly.

Здесь на помощь пришла любимая техника, которую я назвала "убавление раппортов". Что это такое, сейчас расскажу. Убавления в деталях мы можем выполнять по одной или две петли одинарными или двойными убавлениями в указанных местах через установленное количество рядов. Деталь постепенно становится более узкой, и этот момент всем понятен, подходит для глади и несложных мелких узоров. Но что делать, когда узор чуть крупнее, чем две петли? Убавляя по одной петле мы испортим вид; раппорты узора будут казаться обкусанными, неполноценными и обиженными на жизнь. Никто не говорит, что это плохо, и есть случаи, когда по-другому поступить нельзя. Но если есть возможность выбрать другую технологию, так почему бы и нет? Скажем, в кардигане Yeti – втачной рукав, где очень важна точная форма проймы и оката, и предпочтение отдано именно ей, жертвуя другие возможности интереснее обыграть узор.
The whole motif decrease is a simultaneous or gradual decrease of all stitches contained in one single pattern repeat.
Let's look at some examples below. Here, the motif disappears entirely in an instant, the neighboring motifs merge or converge, continuing the stitch pattern.
The repeat of the Mini-Cables pattern consists of 3 stitches; all three stitches decrease simultaneously.
The repeat of the Rain pattern consists of 5 stitches; five stitches decrease in two rows.
The repeat of the "Figures Eight" pattern consists of 6 stitches; five of them decrease at the same time.

Canyon cardigan was a little more complicated. The stitch pattern repeat here consists of 8 stitches, and it was almost impossible to decrease so many stitches at the same time without the appearance of folds and bumps. But extending the process of decreasing by as much as five rows salvaged the situation. It may seem that decreases here occur randomly, planting some impenetrable jungle of cables. But believe me, all the decreases are located precisely and mathematically, shaping an anatomical yoke. For the first time in the pattern, knitting yoke is presented separately for each of 6 sizes, making the knitting process more comfortable, and the size range captures even sizes such as XXS and 4XL.
